Sublingual Immunotherapy

Sublingual immunotherapy, commonly referred to as SLIT, is a form of allergen immunotherapy used for selected patients with specific allergic conditions. Unlike medicines that primarily control allergy symptoms, immunotherapy aims to gradually modify the body's response to a particular allergen through repeated exposure to carefully measured amounts. In sublingual immunotherapy, the allergen preparation is administered under the tongue according to a treatment schedule prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional.

It may be considered when a patient's symptoms are linked to a specific allergen and when conventional allergy management alone does not provide adequate control or when a longer-term approach to managing the allergy is appropriate. Before starting treatment, the patient generally undergoes a detailed clinical assessment and, where appropriate, allergy testing to identify the relevant allergen. Not every patient with allergies is suitable for SLIT, and the decision depends on the type of allergy, severity of symptoms, age, medical history, medications, and other individual factors.

Treatment usually requires regular administration over an extended period, and adherence to the prescribed schedule is important. Some patients may experience mild local reactions, such as itching or irritation in the mouth or throat, particularly during the early stages of treatment. The healthcare provider explains how the treatment should be used and what symptoms require medical attention. Sublingual immunotherapy should only be taken according to the prescribed instructions and should not be started without appropriate evaluation.

The goal is not simply to provide immediate relief from an allergic episode but to reduce sensitivity to the relevant allergen over time in suitable patients. The response to treatment varies between individuals, and ongoing review may be required to assess progress and determine whether treatment should be continued. SLIT can form part of a broader allergy management plan that may also include environmental measures, symptom-relieving medicines, and other forms of treatment where appropriate. Proper patient selection, accurate identification of the allergen, and regular follow-up are important parts of safe and effective immunotherapy.
