A skin prick test is a commonly used method of evaluating whether a person has an allergic sensitivity to specific substances known as allergens. Allergies can contribute to symptoms such as repeated sneezing, runny or blocked nose, nasal itching, watery eyes, and other symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis. During a skin prick test, small amounts of selected allergen extracts are placed on the skin, usually on the forearm or back, and the surface of the skin is gently pricked so that the allergen can come into contact with the immune system.
The area is then observed for a local reaction over a short period. When a person is sensitised to a particular allergen, the test may produce a small raised, itchy area similar to a mosquito bite. The size and nature of the reaction are assessed by the healthcare professional. The allergens included in testing are selected according to the patient's symptoms, environment, exposure history, and clinical assessment. Common allergens may include certain pollens, house dust mites, moulds, animal allergens, or other environmental substances.
A skin prick test does not by itself confirm that an allergen is responsible for every symptom. The results need to be interpreted together with the patient's medical history and pattern of symptoms. Allergy testing may be helpful when symptoms are frequent, persistent, seasonal, or difficult to control, particularly when identifying specific triggers could help guide treatment or allergen avoidance. The procedure is generally quick and minimally invasive, although temporary itching or local swelling may occur at positive test sites.
Patients may need to avoid certain medicines, particularly some antihistamines, before testing because they can interfere with the results; the healthcare provider will provide appropriate instructions beforehand. Skin prick testing can provide useful information about allergic sensitisation and may help determine whether a patient could benefit from measures such as allergen avoidance, medication, or selected forms of allergen immunotherapy. It is an important tool in the overall assessment of patients with suspected allergic conditions.
