Nasal endoscopy is a specialised examination that allows an ENT specialist to obtain a detailed view of the inside of the nose and areas that may not be adequately visible during a routine examination. It is performed using a thin endoscope, which may be rigid or flexible and is equipped with a light source and camera. The instrument is carefully introduced through the nostril to examine the nasal passages, septum, turbinates, and deeper areas leading towards the sinus openings and back of the nose.
Nasal endoscopy may be recommended for patients experiencing persistent nasal blockage, recurrent sinus problems, nasal discharge, post-nasal drip, recurrent nosebleeds, reduced sense of smell, facial pressure, or suspected nasal polyps. It can also be useful when symptoms continue despite treatment or when the specialist needs to assess the nasal structures before considering further treatment or surgery. The examination provides a direct view of areas where inflammation, swelling, polyps, infection, bleeding points, structural abnormalities, or other changes may be present.
In some situations, nasal endoscopy may help the specialist identify the source of symptoms that cannot be determined through a routine examination alone. Depending on the patient's sensitivity and the type of examination, a local anaesthetic or decongestant spray may be used to make the procedure more comfortable and improve visibility. The examination is generally brief and does not usually require hospital admission. Mild discomfort, sneezing, watering of the eyes, or a temporary sensation of nasal irritation may occur.
Nasal endoscopy is particularly valuable because it provides real-time visual information and allows the ENT specialist to assess the condition of the nasal passages more precisely. The findings may be considered alongside the patient's symptoms and, when required, imaging such as a CT scan of the sinuses. Overall, nasal endoscopy is an important diagnostic tool for evaluating nasal and sinus disorders and helping determine the most appropriate course of management.
