Vestibular Assessment

Vestibular assessment is a specialised evaluation of the body's balance system and is commonly used when a person experiences vertigo, dizziness, imbalance, or a sensation of spinning or movement. The vestibular system is mainly located in the inner ear and works together with the eyes, brain, and muscles to help maintain balance and awareness of body position. Problems affecting this system can produce different types of dizziness, and a detailed assessment can help the specialist understand the nature of these symptoms.

Depending on the patient's history and clinical requirements, vestibular assessment may include specific positional tests, eye movement assessment, balance evaluation, hearing-related tests, or other specialised investigations. One commonly assessed condition is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), in which certain head movements can trigger brief episodes of spinning. Vestibular evaluation may also be considered in patients with recurrent vertigo, unexplained imbalance, dizziness associated with head movement, or symptoms accompanied by hearing changes or tinnitus.

The assessment is generally tailored to the individual's symptoms because dizziness can have many possible causes, including inner-ear disorders, neurological conditions, medication effects, blood pressure-related problems, or other factors. During the assessment, the specialist may ask about the timing, duration, triggers, and associated symptoms of dizziness before performing appropriate physical or specialised tests. Some tests may temporarily reproduce the patient's symptoms, but they are performed in a controlled clinical setting.

The findings are considered together with the patient's medical history and ear examination to determine the possible source of the problem. Vestibular assessment does not always identify a single cause immediately, and additional investigations may sometimes be necessary. Overall, it is an important part of evaluating patients with vertigo and balance problems and can help guide appropriate treatment, rehabilitation, or further specialist evaluation.
