Hearing Test

Hearing tests such as audiometry and tympanometry are important investigations used to assess hearing ability and the functioning of the middle ear. Audiometry measures how well a person can hear different sounds at different frequencies and volumes and helps determine whether hearing is within the expected range or whether hearing loss is present.

During a typical hearing assessment, the patient listens to different tones through headphones or earphones and responds whenever a sound is heard. The results help identify the degree and pattern of hearing loss and whether it affects one or both ears. Tympanometry is a different test that evaluates the condition and function of the middle ear by measuring how the eardrum responds to changes in air pressure.

It can provide useful information about problems such as fluid behind the eardrum, changes in middle-ear pressure, eardrum abnormalities, or other conditions affecting the middle-ear system. These tests may be recommended for children and adults experiencing hearing difficulty, ear blockage, recurrent ear infections, tinnitus, speech and language concerns, dizziness, or other ear-related symptoms. Hearing assessment may also be useful when monitoring hearing over time or evaluating changes following certain ear conditions or treatments.

Audiometry and tympanometry are generally quick and non-invasive, and they do not normally cause pain. The results are interpreted along with the patient's symptoms and ear examination findings. In some cases, further evaluation may be recommended depending on the results. Together, audiometry and tympanometry provide complementary information: audiometry focuses mainly on hearing ability, while tympanometry evaluates middle-ear function. A comprehensive hearing assessment can therefore help identify hearing problems more accurately and assist the ENT specialist or audiologist in deciding whether observation, medical treatment, hearing rehabilitation, further testing, or other management may be appropriate.
