Otoscopy, also known as ear endoscopy, is a routine ENT examination used to closely assess the ear canal and eardrum. It is performed using an otoscope or a specialised ear endoscope that provides light and magnification, allowing the ENT specialist to examine the ear structures clearly. During the examination, the doctor looks for visible abnormalities such as excessive or impacted ear wax, redness, swelling, inflammation, discharge, foreign bodies, skin changes, eardrum perforation, scarring, or other ear-related problems. Otoscopy is commonly performed when a patient experiences ear pain, blocked ears, hearing difficulty, ear discharge, itching, recurrent ear infections, tinnitus, or a feeling of fullness in the ear.
It can help the specialist understand whether symptoms are related to the ear canal, eardrum, or possible middle-ear problems. If wax or discharge prevents a clear view, appropriate cleaning or removal may be required before the examination can be completed. Otoscopy is generally a quick and well-tolerated examination, although some discomfort may occur when the ear is inflamed, infected, or particularly sensitive. The examination may also be performed before or alongside other investigations such as audiometry and tympanometry. While otoscopy provides important visual information, it does not measure hearing ability itself, so additional hearing tests may be recommended when hearing loss or other auditory symptoms are present.
A detailed examination of the ear can help identify problems at an early stage and guide the need for medical treatment, ear cleaning, further diagnostic testing, or surgical evaluation when appropriate. Overall, otoscopy is an important part of ENT care because it provides a direct view of the ear canal and eardrum and helps the specialist assess common ear conditions and determine the most appropriate next step for the patient.
